Note:Electrolysis

Electrolysis

Definition :

1.Electrolysis is a process whereby compounds in either molten or aqueous state are broken down into their constituent by passing electricity through them.

2.The electrolysis cell is the set of apparatus needed to conduct electrolysis.

It should consist of the followings:

* battery

* an electrolyte

* two electrodes

3.Battery is the electrical source.

4.The electrode which is connected to negative terminal of an electric source is called the cathode while the electrode which is connected to the positive terminal of an electric source is called the anode.

5.Electric current flow from the positive terminal of batte

ry to anode then to cathode through electrolyte and back to negative terminal of battery.

6.Observation : Deflacted of ammeter needle.

Electrolysis process have 2 types :

(a) Electrolysis of molten compound

(b) Electrolysis of aqueous solution

Factors that affect the electrolysis of aqueous solution

Ø Position of ions in the Electrochemical Series.

Ø Types of electrode used in the electrolysis.

Ø Concentration of ions in the electrolytes.
