Terms

Definition / Meaning

Electrolyte

substances that can conduct electricity when they are in molten

state or aqueous solution and undergo chemical changes

Non- Electrolyte

substances that cannot conduct electricity either in molten state or aqueous solution.


Electrolysis process

a process whereby compounds in molten or aqueous state are broken down into their constituent elements by passing electricity through them.

Electrode

A conductor ( wire/rod/plate) which carry electric current in and out of an electrolyte during electrolysis.

Anode

An electrode which is connected to the positive terminal of an electric source

Cathode

An electrode which is connected to the negative terminal of an electric source

Cation

A positive charged ion
